Capt. Barbara Ives, USN (Ret.), graduated with honors from the United States Naval Academy and holds the distinction of being among the first class of female academy graduates.rnThe retired captain is a teacher at Saint Mary's Ryken High School, where she served as chair for the mathematics department for two years. She is on the approved list of science fair judges for the Office of Naval Research in three states.rnIn 2007, she was selected as the Veteran Teacher of the Year for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. In that same year, she was recognized by Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. as a National Honor Roll Outstanding American Teacher.
