Less Armor Is More in DARPA's GXV-T Program

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is working on new technology to counter current trends in mechanized warfare without overly burdening armored vehicles. For years, the U.S. military has protected occupants of armored vehicles better with more armor. But that approach has made vehicles less mobile. So, DARPAs Ground X-Vehicle Technology (GXV-T) program seeks revolutionary ground-vehicle technology that improves both mobility and survivability without adding armor. The aim is for technology to let ground vehicles avoid detection and engagement. The programs goal "is not just to improve or replace one particular vehicle-it's about breaking the 'more armor' paradigm and revolutionizing protection for all armored fighting vehicles," says program manager Kevin Massey.
