Coordination Center Serves as Federal Front Line in the Virus Wars

A group of federal computer virus fighters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have found the year 2000 to be a very busy time. The computer emergency response team coordination center (CERT/CC) at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University is at the forefront of government efforts to identify and track Internet worms and viruses (SIGNAL, page 17). The group, which also advises agencies on how to deal with security threats and how to recover from attacks, has been kept on its toes in early 2000.
