Advanced Technology Program Fills Gap Left by Private Sector

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is focusing its advanced technology program (ATP) on high-risk, pre-competitive research and development projects that involve enabling, or platform, technologies. The program has begun its second decade of operations under the new leadership of Alan P. Balutis, a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Department of Commerce. With the goal of keeping the United States competitive, the advanced technology program is designed to "fill the niche between the kinds of investments venture capitalists might make and the basic research funded by NSF [the National Science Foundation] or NIH [the National Institutes of Health]," Balutis explains.
