Thank you for all the Young AFCEA 40 Under 40 Award nominations. Winners will be announced by early April. The awards will be distributed at the Defensive Cyber Operations Symposium May 15-17 in Baltimore. We hope you will join us. A big thank you also goes to the experts who spoke about artificial intelligence (AI) at this year's Young AFCEA panel during the West conference in San Diego. Stephen Winchell, presidential innovation fellow at the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), moderated a panel that included Dr. Josh Harguess, research scientist, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific; Dr. Nikolay Atanasov, assistant professor, University of California, San Diego; and Ryan Tseng, CEO, Shield AI. The panel tackled the question, What does AI mean for missions today? The Defense Innovation Board, a federal advisory committee of experts in academia, technology and business, wrote that "speed is overtaking all other variables as the decisive feature of military advantage. Near-peer competitors are fielding weapons systems that harness new technologies more rapidly than the United States." How should the U.S. military think about deploying AI to counter potential adversaries and maintain superiority? It was an honor to work with the panelists and hear their thoughts on how to use AI going forward. If you missed the panel, check out the story online at news.afcea.org/AIpanel.
