Train radio future for branch lines

Kontron Transportation has developed the MCx OTT (Over The Top) solution for branch lines: Based on the future FRMC standardisation (3GPP, ETSI), the MCx solution extends obsolete analogue radio communication means with modern train radio functionalities, completely without developing an own in-frastructure. Here, the networks of the public providers are used as transport medium for the own MCx application with GSM-R features such as single call, group call and train emergency call. Kontron offers a hosted solution in a data centre or as a serv-er solution in the railway's own IT departments. IP68-capable smartphones with an MCx client, IP-capable dispatchers with several modern user interfaces and cab radios that follow the FRMCS standard serve as terminal devices. As the public networks do not always offer full network cov-erage, the MCx OTT solution was tested in cooperation with the Sauschwaenzlebahn and the Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Transport with regard to transmission security and enhanced with features such as a voice recorder, a heartbeat function, a messenger service and the dispatcher.
