Computer engineering embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of hardware and software components of modern computer systems and computer-controlled equipment. Computer engineers have strong foundations in the theories and principles of computing, mathematics, and engineering and they apply these principles to the design of hardware, software, networks, and computerized equipment and instruments to solve technical problems in diverse application domains. Continuing dramatic advances in computing and digital systems design have created opportunities for computer engineering professionals to apply those developments to the entire range of applications in engineering. One of the impediments to advancing the state of the software engineering discipline is the inadequate preparation of students entering the profession from undergraduate computing programs. This special session will report on the IEEE-CS/ACM Computing Curricula project and the guidance it will provide for developing undergraduate software engineering programs. In particular, the presenters will address the process used to construct the Software Engineering Volume (CCSE), the contents of the first release of the Volume, and the relation of the software engineering curriculum guidelines to international curriculum models. Each presenter will summarize their corresponding contribution to the Volume which will be followed by an extensive question and answer session.
