Although many different kinds of extremely low emission vehicles are on the drawing board, the internal combustion engine will probably continue to be the mainstay of private transportation for many years to come. Thanks to advances in engine management systems, catalytic converter design, sensors, and diagnostic systems, however, these engines are on the way to having a sharply reduced impact on the environment.
