As a relatively recent coastal engineering graduate and a state government employee, I found David Basco's Design of Coastal Hazard Mitigation Alternatives for Rising Seas incredibly pertinent to my everyday work.Basco's book covers design criteria for a wide swath of coastal engineering structures, providing a prudent amalgamation and synthesis of existing methodologies and design considerations. It boldly blends basic coastal and ocean engineering theories with real-world applications and challenges.In a few words, this book is realistic, readily applicable, and holistic.The table of contents is as follows:1.Introduction 2.Design Criteria 3.Alternatives for Hazard Mitigation 4.Probabilistic Design 5.Functional Design 6.Structural Design 7.Beach Engineering 8.Economics, Risk, and Resilience 9.Pile Supported Structures 10.Environmental Impacts 11.Sea Level Rise While the majority of the book is dedicated to basic design for coastal hazard mitigation, a valuable discussion in and of itself, the last chapter specifically focuses on how coastal hazard mitigation alternatives should integrate sea level rise into the design process. For those already familiar with coastal hazard mitigation design, Chapter 11 is the meat of the book's stew, the stringer to its surfboard, or the bottom half of the rapidly melting iceberg if you will.
