Advancing in a different direction

For my summer vacation this year I went with two friends to see some of the FIFA Women's World Cup soccer matches. We had some down days for seeing museums and such; since two of the matches for which we had tickets were in northern France, we planned an overnight in Dunkirk to see the coast and learn more about the history. The tide range in Dunkirk is a mere six meters; further east at Mont St. Michel, it is closer to 12 meters. Still, it was impressive to stand on a jetty at low tide, and see a broad swath of green algae that is submerged enough of the day to survive.
