摘要

Towards the end of the 1970s containerisation had virtually wiped out break bulk cargo ship trading between Europe and North America. Captain A. W. Kinghorn recalls a pair of purpose-built Blue Star container ships which enabled an old sea dog to learn a few new tricks. Soon after arriving in Liverpool with the conventional cargo liner Gladstone Star (SM, July 2000), I was appointed to take command of New Zealand Star (III), Blue Star Line's latest container ship under construction at the Tees Side yard at Haverton Hill. The new vessel would not be ready until December 1978 but by the time my leave ended it was still early April.
