The Glasgow partnership of Handysides and Henderson commenced using the name Anchor Line in 1852. At this time the partnership was acting as manager of the Glasgow and Lisbon Steam Packet Company but had quickly started allocating sailing ships to India and South America routes as well as the Baltic trades. The Company's North Atlantic trade got underway when the steamer Tempest (1855/866gt) was dispatched from Glasgow to New York in 1856. In the same year, services from Glasgow to Lisbon were commenced to replace those provided by the managed Lisbon Steam Packet Co, and over the years the Lisbon service was extended to cover ports in Spain, Italy and Egypt.
