Peninsular and Oriental, surely one of the world's most evocative and widely recognised company names, has latterly described a multi-faceted giant with interests in shipping of all descriptions, freight forwarding, road haulage, tourism, construction and property. P&O has always been most closely associated with matters maritime and as recently as the early 1980s the Group controlled 78 vessels of 1,471,366gt although, out of a worldwide workforce of 25,000, only 7,600 were seagoing.
