Ellerman A wealth of cities

In our latest Special issue, Roy Fenton outlines the history of the Ellerman group which, by acquiring many, mostly successful, liner companies, grew into one of the greatest shipowners of the 20th century. The Special begins with a look at Ellerman acquisitions consisting of short histories of each subsidiary company. Some of the more notable of Ellennan's passenger ships are described, with photos of each vessel. Three of the City ships' experiences of wartime action are described in Cities at war. Accompanying the text are the flags and funnels of the different companies associated with Ellerman. The Special ends with accounts of the major post-war Ellerman classes of ship employed by the company trading round the world.
