The name of David MacBrayne retains legendary status in the Western Isles, although the fabled gentleman's start in shipping was low key, as a partner in David Hutcheson & Co, formed in 1851. This was when the goodwill and West Highland fleet of G. and i. Burns was acquired by David Hutcheson who had been responsible for day-to-day running of the company as its chief clerk.
