Ghost Ships include last LST

The US Maritime Administration has made arrangements to have the last of several high-priority vessels removed from the James River Reserve Fleet in Virginia by awarding five ship-disposal contracts worth a total of US$2,161,610 to North American Ship Recycling at Sparrows Point, Maryland. Three of the vessels, Pride (ex-Mormacpride), Scan (ex-Mormacscan) and Southern Cross (ex-Mormactrade) are former Moore-McCormack freighters while Cape Charles last operated as Lykes Line's 1963-built Charlotte Lykes. The final ship, Sphinx, was built for the US Navy in 1944 as USS Sphinx (ARL-24), a landing craft repair ship and the last World War ll-built LST type vessel to remain in the mothball fleet. A preservation group, the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum of Dunkirk, New York, had been trying to save the vessel as a museum ship but this effort failed.
