Former ferry for Polar cruising

After more than 20 years linking Kapellskar, Sweden, with Aland Islands capital Mariehamn as Alandsfarjan, a ferry which once sailed between Dover and Boulogne is being converted by Aker Yards at Rauma for a new career as a Polar expedition cruise ship. Bought from Viking Line for €2.6 million by Canadian company GAP Adventures, the 6,336gt vessel will emerge as Expedition equipped to carry 120 passengers on cruises off Antarctica and to remote islands in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Built at Helsingor as Danish domestic ferry Kattegat in 1972, she was bought by P&O Normandy Ferries in 1978 and, as nf Tiger, became second ship on a Dover-Boulogne service started two years earlier when Lion was moved from the Irish Sea.
