Fram's narrow escape

Just over a month after the sinking of the expedition ship Explorer, the Norwegian-registered Fram, the newest passenger vessel built specifically to sail in Antarctic waters, had a narrow escape on 28 December. She suffered an electrical outage and lost engine power for about half an hour. In this short time, she drifted into an iceberg near Brown's Bluff on the northern tip of the Antarctic peninsula, which resulted in a starboard lifeboat being crushed but little other damage. No injuries were reported among the 276 passengers and 70 crew members.
