The cunarders caronia and Orcades may have differed in many ways, but they shared a feature unusual to passenger liners - a single tripod mast. Victor Young investigates the origins of this strange design feature.rnIt would seem there is little to connect the British passenger liners Caronia and Orcades. Caronia, known to her crews as 'the green goddess', was built for Atlantic service, but quickly became the main vessel maintaining Cunard's share of the post-war cruise market. Orcades, on the other hand, was conceived for the regular UK-Australasia passenger services on which her owners had built their trade and reputation. However, both vessels were completed with a single, naval pattern, tripod mast. Although this was a common feature of British naval construction, Caronia and Orcades were the only major British passenger liners of the post-war era to be so fitted.rnThe choice of mast was perhaps even more unusual for Orient Line. The fact thatrnOronsay, near sister to Orcades, was completed in 1950 with a stylish pole mast was perhaps an indication that the masting of Orcades was indeed a 'one-off' design feature. This progression was taken further in 1953 with the introduction of Orsova, built without any conventional masting. Vickers Armstrong, builders of Orcades and one of Britain's main naval yards, was perhaps responsible, more than Orient Line, for this most naval feature in the first vessel to be part of Orient Line's post-war building programme.
