Rebuilt For The Antarctic

The chinse-flagged generalrncargo ship Xue Long has a ro-ro facility and has recently been rebuilt in Shanghai to make her one of the most versatile supply vessels currently to serve the Antarctic. The vessel works as a research vessel as well as a supply ship for bases in Antarctica. She is operated by the Government of the People's Republic of China and is registeredrnin Shanghai. Built at Kherson (now in the Ukraine) in 1993, she was to be one of the Vitus Bering class for the USSR. She took the name Xue Long in 1995, having previously been named Snow Dragon.rnFitted with a side door and ramp, and with red hull prominent after a recent repaint, she sailed from Melbourne for her latest voyage to the Antarctic on 8 January.
