On 19 March 1959 a new steamship, yard number 353, was named at the Swedish shipyard of A. B. Oskarshamns to begin a career which has lasted half a century. The new vessel, a single-screw two-funnelled steamship, was named Bore by Mrs Kim von Rettig, wife of Finnish shipping magnate Hans von Rettig, head of the Rettig Group, which owned the Bore Shipping Company The ship could accommodate 1,028 day passengers, but on overnight service had only 335 berths in 150 cabins. She was also able to carry 20 cars, which were loaded through a side door on her port side below the bridge.
