Turkey's first domestically produced major warship has entered service with the navy. TCG Heybeliada is the prototype for up to 12 corvettes designed for anti-submarine warfare and offshore patrol duties under the MILGEM programme. The name is derived from 'Milli Cemi', which translates as 'national ship'. The programme was conceived in 1996 with the aim of reducing Turkey's dependence on foreign shipyards for its naval projects, and two ships were ordered from the Istanbul Naval Shipyard in 2007. Their design and construction has involved more than 50 Turkish companies and resulted in a 65 per cent national product.
