The cargo liner was the doyenne of freight ships. Unlike the tramp, it ran between set ports, carrying an enormous variety of merchandise and sailing on a regular schedule whether full or not. Often fast and well looked after by a comparatively large crew, it usually represented the state of the art in cargo ship design. This feature celebrates a type of ship made redundant by containerisation but much-missed by enthusiasts, and it considers some of the significant cargo liners which served five major trade routes.
