Ferry plan criticised

Maritime union RMT has hit out at proposals in Transport Scotland's consultation document on the Draft Ferries Plan, which it fears could lead to the privatisation of five profitable Caledonian MacBrayne network routes: Ardrossan-Brodick; Wemyss Bay-Rothesay; Oban-Craignure; Largs-Cumbrae; and the Pentland Firth. RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: 'Make no mistake, if the five identified Cal Mac routes are sold-off for profit it will fire the starting gun for the smashing apart of the Scottish ferries as a public service. We agree there needs to be investment in fleet and infrastructure, but that should be seen as exactly the kind of project that can create jobs, not as an excuse for handing fat contracts to outfits for extortionate leasing agreements.
