During the 1970s the Liverpool tug scene was stable, with two major rival towage companies operating on the Mersey: ATC and Rea Towing Company Limited (RTC). ATC, established in 1887 to operate G. B. Cowl's four tugs with names prefixed Flying, in 1888 took delivery from an Ayr shipyard of its first new tug, Alexandra. Fast forward to the 1960s, and December 1966, when ATC acquired the Liverpool Screw Towing Company Ltd and its subsidiary, North West Tugs Ltd, known as Cock Tugs, and, in July 1968, J. H. Lamey Ltd. In September 1970 the Cock and Lamey tugs were given ATC names and colours.
