In March 1942, just four months after the loss of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in the Mediterranean, an order was placed with Cammell Laird for a new carrier, Irresistible. She was to be built to a new design - an improved, larger version of the Implacable class - but before being launched was renamed Ark Royal. A sistership, Audacious, was ordered from Harland & Wolff, and shortly before her launch she also adopted a famous carrier name, Eagle.
