Royal Navy Command first identified the need for a persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) asset to support its Fleet in 2012 during Gulf operations. The release of an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) led to the setting up of Maritime Unmanned Air System HQ (MUAS) in October 2012, followed by the introduction of the Boeing Defence Insitu ScanEagle, which was first deployed aboard HMS Somerset and RFA Cardigan Bay (a Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship) from December 2013.
