In the early morning hours of 9 November 1971 radio stations in Ireland began picking up calls from a cargo ship in distress. The messages were brief and weak, giving only the vessel's call letters, location and the code 'we need immediate assistance'. They lasted for only about three minutes, ending abruptly at 0420 GMT.
