Beneath the Maltese Cross

Few British companies operated such a diverse fleet of ships as Houlders. The company's Maltese Cross funnel colours were seen on meat carriers, oil tankers, conventional cargo liners, drill ships, tramps and liquid gas carriers. Although Houldcr Brothers lost their independence following a boardroom row in 1911, their individuality survived, and it was not until 1985 that the Maltese Cross flag was finally hauled down.
