The NS Savannah is a gleaming example of what every preserved merchant ship could and should be. She is now at Baltimore's Canton Marine Terminal (Pier 13), with her paintwork glistening and her once ravaged interiors having been painstakingly restored. The irony is that her preservation is less voluntary than it is mandatory, thanks to traces of radioactive materials in her long since defuelled reactor that will not be safe to eradicate until 2031. The brainchild of President Eisenhower, she was conceived in 1955 as a showcase merchant ship for the 'Atoms For Peace' programme, a joint project of the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Atomic Energy Commission. Following congressional approval in 1956, plans for the $47 million vessel were drawn up by George G. Sharp, Inc of New York, one of America's leading maritime architectural firms.
