The UK MoD's Disposal Services Authority (DSA) has invited tenders for the sale of the stricken former HMS Endurance. The ice patrol ship suffered catastrophic flooding when near Chile in December 2008 and she has been laid up at Portsmouth ever since her repatriation as deck cargo in April 2009. The DSA has warned parties interested in acquiring the vessel for future use that restoring her would require considerable investment. No repair work has taken place since the flood that affected areas from the bilge to C deck across her midships watertight section. Associated machinery and accommodation areas are listed as being destroyed or badly damaged. Her two Bergen diesel engines, two Mitsubishi generators and two shaft generators are all described as severely flood damaged and likely to be seized or not working. Viewings of the vessel are due to take place in late September and early October. Given her poor condition, it is inevitable that she will be towed for scrap by the end of the year.
