Although the name Silja did not appear until 1956, the roots of the company can be traced back to 1904, when two Finnish shipowners, Finska Angfartygs Aktiebolag (FAA, later Effoa) and Angfartygs Aktiebolag Bore, ended a fierce rivalry on the Turku-Stockholm line and initiated a joint service. In 1918 the Stockholm-based Rederi AB Svea joined as a third partner. Collectively, the three companies were referred to in Swedish (the home language of all three companies) as De Samseglande Rederierna, meaning 'The Joint Service Ship Owners'.
