Before 1941 Japan had one of the largest and most advanced navies in the world. The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) had been greatly expanded during the 1930s with the addition of new aircraft carriers. However, battleships were not overlooked, and the IJN tore up earlier naval treaties limiting their size when they laid down the blueprints for the Yamato class, of which only two were built: Yamato and Musashi.
