The Harwich-Esbjerg route was at its peak from the 1960s to the 1990s, with daily sailings in each direction by large and comfortable passenger and vehicle ferries. Due to the lack of a ro-ro ramp at Harwich, DFDS's first North Sea car ferry England (1964/8,221gt) was built with side doors but, three years later, Winston Churchill (8,657gt) appeared with bow and stern access, the pair holding sway for over a decade before being replaced by Dana Regina (1974/12,192gt) and then Dana Anglia (1978/I4,399gt), both built in Denmark at Aalborg.
