The Scottish Government announced in April that the ferry service between Ardrossan and Campbeltown, trialled during the past three summers, is to become permanent. The link between North Ayrshire and Kintyre, an alternative to a road journey of almost four hours from Glasgow to Campbeltown, was the first new Caledonian MacBrayne route for 20 years. Around 30,000 passengers used the three-times-a-week service operated by the 446-passenger/46-car/six-lorry Isle of Arran (1984/3,296gt) during the pilot period. Tourism businesses in Kintyre said it had made a difference to the Campbeltown area's economy and helped to reduce its isolation.
