VT Halter Marine's facility at Pascagoula, Mississippi has laid the keel for the second Commitment class LNG-powered Con-Ro ship it is building for Crowley Maritime Corporation, with the first ship's keel having been laid in January 2015. Cargo capacity will be approximately 2.400TEU, with additional space for nearly 400 vehicles in an enclosed garage. Both 219.5m by 32.2m ships have been designed to maximise the carriage of 53ft containers, which are popular in the American market, and will have a deadweight capacity of 26,500 tonnes on a draught of 10m. To be named El Coqui and Taino, they are scheduled for delivery during the second and fourth quarter of 2017 respectively and will replace Crowley's towed triple-deck barge fleet in the Puerto Rico trade.
