International commercial traffic along the Northern Sea Route has not grown as much as predicted, but this is not stopping Russia from making major commitments in the north, including building a fleet of new petroleum carriers and gas ships, as well as new icebreakers. In the latter sphere, the country's Baltic Shipyard at St Petersburg has floated out the hull of the icebreaker Arktika, which will displace 33,540 tonnes.
