China's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has won a contract to build five 3,500TEU container ships for an undisclosed Japanese owner, with another five on option. If the options are exercised, the total value of the contract will be $396 million, with the first ships to be delivered starting in November 2022. Plunging demand for diesel and jet fuel because of Covid-19 has pressured BP to charter the recently completed Chinese tanker Yuan Gui Yang for six months at a cost of $37,500 per day. Owned by Shanghai-based Cosco Energy Transportation, the VLCC was completed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in October 2020 and will be used to store nearly two million barrels of distillates.
