Stewart Taylor Williamson (1888-1950) was unusual among shipowners in starting his working life as neither a master mariner nor as a ship broker, but rather as a marine engineer. As such he visited Shanghai in 1915 as Chief Engineer with the Union Steamship Company, and evidently saw opportunities there, as he joined Moller and Co and quickly became their Marine Superintendent. Probably because he was chartering ships on his own account, he fell out with his employers, but had become wealthy enough to open a coal bunkering operation in Hong Kong. To serve this business he began buying ships in 1922, but evidently saw other opportunities than carrying coal. The most spectacular of these was conversion of the former German steamer Feldmarschall, which had been captured by the British in East Africa in 1916.
