The end of an era came on 5 October, when Thames ferries James Newman and Ernest Bevin made their their final crossings between Woolwich and North Woolwich after 55 years of service, before the historic free ferry closed to prepare for the arrival of new vessels nearing completion by Remontowa in Poland and due on stream early in 2019. Sister vessel John Burns left the Thames the same day and was joined in the middle of the month at Le Havre breakers Gardet et de Bezenac by the remaining pair. The 1,194gt sisterships, each carrying up to 310 passengers and 32 cars, were built in Dundee for London County Council by Rob Caledon in 1963, and since 2001 have been operated by the London Borough of Greenwich on behalf of Transport for London.
