Polish shiprepair yards improved their efficiency and results in 1997. They re-paired over 700 ships and delivered 10 newbuildings of various types, earning approx. Z1600 million (US$172 million). Their shiprepair volume and turnover were similar to 1996, but their financial Position improved. Six out of seven Polish shiprepair yards reported profits, only Parnica Shiprepair Yard (Szczecin) registering a loss. All Polish shiprepair yards hope to remain profitable in 1998 and are making every effort to increase their p'roduction capacities and cut costs. Remontowa Gdansk Shiprepair Yard, one of Europe's largest shiprepair yards, is the leader in the Polish shiprepair market. In 1997 it repaired 280 vessels, car-ried out a large number of ship conversi-ons and delivered 2 ships. It earned Z1280 million (US$80 million).
