It has long been a dream to have a vehicle that can travel on both land and sea. Over the years a number of amphibian vehicles have been developed to meet this requirement with the US Army wartime DUKW being one of the most famous. Up until recently all of these amphibious vehicles have had relatively slow speed on the water, rarely more than 6knots and their sea-going ability has mainly restricted their use to calmer waters. Now a new generation of amphibious vehicles is emerging that have a higher speed capability on the water combined with considerable performance on land.
