Environmental concerns influence cat design

BITS is a division of Transit Systems Australia, a large public transport company in Australia, and currently operates a short-run commuter ferry service to the Southern Moreton Bay islands, south of Brisbane.rnThe operating environment presents some challenges for BITS. Although the area is basically sheltered, with a maximum significant wave height of 0.5m, sudden storms do occur. The water temperature in summer is around 27℃ and parts of the run are extremely shallow, with limiting depths of 1.5m. Significant beach erosion has occurred, which is commonly perceived as the fault of the ferries operating in the area. The shallow docks and banks cause continual silting of the vessel's cooling systems, a factor in high ongoing maintenance costs.
