Much more stringent, upcoming environmental limits, including the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 edicts entering force in 2014, have made the development of competitive, high power density, high-speed engines extremely complex, given the companion requirements for power advances and reduced unit fuel consumption. Nonetheless, engine designers have risen to the challenge, and portfolios are being extended and modernised at a quickened pace.
