Green ship technology, alternative propulsion - call it what you will, but there's no denying that almost every exhibition you attend, from the compact London IMPA event to the mammoth that is Hamburg's SMM, will feature a barrage of prominent, eye-catching graphics extolling the virtues of environmentally friendly ship and boat designs. It sometimes takes a while to scratch beneath the surface, to discover a slightly less enthusiastic take on matters. In 2011, at Oslo's Nor-Shipping conference and expo, a few industry representatives were happy to have a word on the quiet with Ship & Boat International, mainly to express reservations regarding the pace at which green ship technology is actually developing.
