Electric propulsion for work boats is not new; passenger boats powered by electric motors and batteries were taking people to the Great Exhibition in Chicago over 100 years ago and diesel-electric ship systems have been in use for the past 70 years. However, today there is renewed interest in electric propulsion for workboats spurred on by the need to reduce emissions and to operate with green credentials in many port and harbour areas.
