Laborde shrinks power unit for barge market

Louisiana, US-based power systems producer Laborde Products has launched a compact version of its C1-D1 unit, comprising an all-mechanical Mitsubishi S6B3 engine, specifically intended for use aboard barges and delivering 315.5kW. According to Thomas Cash, head of engineering at Laborde, the unit has been designed to be retrofitted to the mounting bases of Labordes previous, larger C1-D1 model. Cash says: "The Cl-Dl needed to be more compact to retrofit on older barge designs, and onto barges operating on the Ohio River, due to height restrictions. We [have] shrunk overall height to 1.52m." Previous version heights spanned 1.8m to 2.8m.
