Smart shipping', 'big data', 'ship intelligence' - call it what you like but, in terms of a genuine sea change, new technologies are set to herald the marine industry's biggest shake-up in living memory. The arguments for remote-controlled and /or autonomous vessels are compelling for a number of ship and boat sectors, as this issue's Unmanned Vessels and Ferries features highlight. The arguments have largely come to centre on operational efficiency and personnel safety.
