When conducting boat-to-turbine technician transfers, pushing onto the turbine can prove a significant drain on vessel thrust and often requires a high degree of force from the propellers, thereby increasing fuel consumption and impacting on operational costs. Additionally, it is important that a firm connection is established between the boat and the landing point, to ensure safe transit of technicians. It was with these factors in mind that operator Windcat Workboats developed its self-tensioning Windgrip system, an award-winning solution which has been rolled out across 12 of Windcat's 39 vessels. With a patent in the pipeline, the Windgrip scooped the RenewableUK Health & Safety Conference's Renewable Energy Health & Safety Award for 2016, in recognition of the safer access to offshore wind turbines that the system can provide.
