Originally established in 1859 to provide a vital transport link between East Cowes and West Cowes over the River Medina, the Cowes Floating Bridge has become something of an institution on the Isle of Wight. Although the crossing literally takes minutes, covering a distance of approximately 165m, the service is a popular one, responsible for transporting 1.5m million foot passengers and 400,000 vehicles annually.
